The end of another school year may be just over week away — but there are plenty of opportunities for continued learning over the summer.
The Federal Way School District has announced several options for summer school during the break.
• There is, of course, the option for the traditional summer school. Language, arts, math, science and history classes are available for students who wish to make up credits or retake a class for better understanding. Classes are one hour and 55 minutes long each day, and run from June 22 through July 31.
“The main reason is for credit retrieval,” summer school principal Wil Derrick said. “Maybe they failed or got sick or couldn’t complete the course. This gives students an opportunity to take these classes and graduate on schedule.”
There are two opportunities to register for the traditional summer school, but students only have a few more weeks to sign up. A mail-in registration form (available online at www.fwps.org/info/summerschool/traditional.html) must be received by June 15. There is also a walk-through registration at Federal Way High School from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18.
This is a fee-based program, with each class costing the student $190.
• Another option for gaining high school credit is the summer Internet academy program.
Online classes are offered in language arts, math, science, social studies and electives, including accounting, business law, drawing, Web design and others.
Students can take up to two classes.
Students can also take credit retrieval classes online in language arts, math, science and social studies.
Classes are $195 each and the course runs from June 29 through Aug. 21.

• The Internet academy is also offering a new class this summer on personal fitness. The physical education class will involve students researching and designing a personal fitness plan and setting goals as well as monitoring flexibility, aerobic strength and nutritional intake. This class costs $95 and is worth one PE credit.
• Another PE credit program will be held at Todd Beamer High School where students can join a free independent study class. It is being offered as a way for students to stay active over the summer without the cost of a gym membership. It can also be used to make up a half of a credit in either PE or an elective. Students will hold fundraisers to pay for the program.
There are non-fee-based summer programs going on in the district, Summer Bridge and Success Camps. These programs are by invitation from the district. Both programs are for kids that schools nominate who need some extra instruction and time. Summer Bridge is funded the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce and Community in Schools of Federal Way. It is for students in grades five to eight.
Success camps are held in August each year for students who are about to enter either middle school or high school.
