A closer look

Federal Way photographer Todd Dearinger took a ride with Red Eagles stunt pilot Billy Werth in a Pitts S2C biplane. Click here to watch a video from inside the cockpit during Thursday’s air show practice as they do barrel rolls, tricks and loops over Seattle.

Werth is co-owner of Grayout Aerosports. According to a website bio, Werth grew up in an Air Force family and started in flying in 1988. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in professional aviation technology from Indiana State University, and has been teaching aerobatics since 1992. In 1997, Werth started flying the KC-135R for the Air Force Reserves. He was hired by Chautauqua Airlines in 2001 and is now a captain on the Embraer 145, based in Indianapolis. Werth has more than 6,000 hours of flight time in 20 different aircraft, with 600 of those hours teaching pilots how to fly upside down.
