City Hall salaries shortchange mayor | Federal Way letters

On Jan. 22, the Tacoma News Tribune published a front page story about Federal Way. Specifically, the story mentioned the way the city government has been reorganized and that Skip Priest is making progress in his new job as the “strong” mayor.

On Jan. 22, the Tacoma News Tribune published a front page story about Federal Way. Specifically, the story mentioned the way the city government has been reorganized and that Skip Priest is making progress in his new job as the “strong” mayor.

The story also gave the salaries of the top 10 salaried jobs in city government. Guess who is the lowest paid? Yes, it is the mayor.

I am no expert in city government, but it does seem to me that there is something wrong here. Apparently, those other jobs report to the mayor, but the mayor is paid less.

May I ask a stupid question? If the workload of the mayor has increased, that must mean that the workload of someone else has decreased. Who would that be? Is it the Federal Way City Council? Why not decrease the salaries of the city council by $28,248 and give it to the mayor so that at least his salary would be equal to that of the parks director?
