Consumer fireworks in Federal Way brings $615 fine

The Federal Way Police Department wants to remind residents that, except by special permit, it is “unlawful to possess, use, sell, discharge, or explode fireworks of any kind within the City of Federal Way.”

According to Federal Way Revised Code 6.63.050, violations are punishable by a $615 fine, and any person who discharges or uses a firework in a reckless manner that creates a substantial risk of serious physical injury to another person or damage to another person’s property, which is an arrestable offense.

According to the Washington State Patrol’s 2024 Fire in Washington report, there have been more than 2,200 firework-related fires and 916 injuries reported from 2020 to 2024 in the state. 2024. In 2024, 61% of the injuries were burns, with the face/head and hand/arm being the body parts most often afflicted.

Instead of firing off fireworks, residents can attend Federal Way’s Red, White & Blue 4th of July celebration at Celebration Park at 10:15 p.m. on Saturday. Celebration Park is located at 1095 S. 324th St.
