Angel Vue has been running Angel’s Green Flower Shop at the Federal Way Commons for over a year now, but her unique floral arrangements and services have been a part of the South Puget Sound (and its bounty of farmers markets) for over 20 years.

Originally from Minnesota, Vue moved to Federal Way with her husband, Xue, in 2003 and she built up a list of clients and customers since then. While Vue said she has had different shops throughout King, Pierce and Lewis counties, she opened the Federal Way shop to be closer to home and her four children.

“The older one’s started to go to college, and that’s when it hit me really hard that I can’t take my kids to school and at the same time attending to that over there at the same time,” Vue said. “I decided to open closer to home, and then I found this one because it’s only five minutes from my place.”

Vue, who is contracted with Teleflora, waited for a location in the mall that was large enough for her inventory and customers.

“There’s a lot of people who said that’s what inspired them to come to this mall because there’s a flower shop here,” she said.

While Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are notoriously the busiest times for flower shops, Vue is unfazed by the work, despite doing the arrangements herself.

“People start to place orders in November already, because there will be a lot of people in and we cut off on Valentine’s Day. I’ll only take 400 or 500 orders for that one day and then I cut off that very day,” said Vue.

When asked why she does not have more people working in her shop, Vue said that her way of arranging flowers is unique and that she is careful about taking on new people to train.

“I don’t want to give all my technique, everything that I have been having for so long and pass it out for them for a few months, and they go open another shop for themselves,” Vue said, though she adds that she believes creativity cannot be taught. “I can only tell a person so much but they don’t have what I have.”

Vue said that, along with being selective of her floral techniques, she also has her arrangements copyrighted, saying that her style of arrangements is often duplicated.

Her flowers and vases, which line the walls and skirt the floors of her shop, all show her creative touch and her real love for flowers — two components a floral shop needs for success. And as a runner-up in this year’s Best of Federal Way, it shows that a third component – customer service – is also abundant at Angel’s Green Flower Shop.

“I do what I love, and I do what I want. I treat people how I want to be treated,” she said.

Angel’s Green Flower Shop is located at 2011 South Commons 730-D002 in Federal Way, inside the mall near the Century cinema. Open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 253-528-0049 or visit angelsflowershop.com.
