It was announced at the Nov. 25 WIAA executive board meeting that the first ever Washington State Flag Football Championships will be held at Federal Way Memorial Field. The championship is scheduled for Feb. 13-14.

The first state sanctioned sport since bowling (1999), girls flag football has exploded in popularity, and now their state tournament has a home.

The field’s renovations were finished in 2023, and at the time, then Federal Way Director of Equity and Athletics Jerry Peterson said one of the goals of the renovation was to host playoffs and even state events.

1A, 2A, 1B/2B boys soccer will be hosted at Federal Way Memorial Field, and now girls flag football will join the party.

4A will have a 12-team tournament, 3A will have 16 teams competing, 2A has eight. But just the semifinals and finals will be played at Federal Way Memorial Field.

“We’re excited to host athletes, families and fans in Federal Way Memorial Field for the first ever flag football state championships. It’s always an honor when our facilities can support student athletes from across Washington. We look forward to a great competition and celebrating the hard work and dedication of all the teams participating,” FWPS Director of Equity and Athletics John Yellam said.

“This is now the third state-level competition to be hosted at Federal Way Memorial Field, and it would not be possible without the support from the Federal Way community who helped us build a facility that supports these high school sporting events,” Yellam said.

Last season, Woodinville captured the state championship over Capital at Mount Tahoma. The Falcons will now defend that crown at Federal Way Memorial Field.
