It was an unusual sight at the WIAA 4A boys basketball state tournament: Two of Federal Way’s star players sitting on the sidelines with three minutes to go during the semifinal game against returning state champs Gonzaga Prep.

Federal Way senior Jaden McDaniels, a McDonald’s 2019 All American, and junior Tari Eason both fouled out during the final few minutes of the fourth quarter of Friday’s game.

Gonzaga Prep beat Federal Way 61-53 on Friday, March 1.

The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups then went on to claim the 4A state championship the next day, defeating Mount Si 69-43 on March 2.

Federal Way ultimately placed third after a win against Curtis 95-67 on Saturday, March 2.

Last year, the Eagles finished second in the 4A state competition to Gonzaga Prep.
