West Hylebos Park cabins open for tours Saturday

Published 3:30 pm Friday, October 7, 2016

Tour the cabins of two pioneers and enjoy the boardwalk of a rare, picturesque 120-acre wetlands preserve located less than a mile from I-5.

The log cabins, located at West Hylebos Wetlands Park on South 348th Street just west of Pacific Highway South, will be open to the public Saturday, Oct. 8, between noon and 4 p.m. Tours will be provided by the Historical Society of Federal Way and the Federal Way Lions Club.

David Denny, an early Seattle settler, built his cabin at the base of Queen Anne Hill, near Seattle Center, as a real estate office in 1889. The John Barker Cabin, built in 1883, is the oldest building in Federal Way and houses a variety of vintage furniture and household items. Each structure represents a different style of log cabin architecture, providing visitors with a sense of the 19th-century pioneer lifestyle in a beautiful locale.

The cabins are maintained by the Historical Society of Federal Way. Visit www.federalwayhistory.org and the Historical Society of Federal Way’s Facebook page for further information.
