Seven recent high school graduates from Federal Way are bound for Pacific Lutheran University after receiving a full-ride scholarship to the Washington college.

The school’s “PLU Bound Scholarship” was awarded to 253 students with 3.7 or higher GPAs who attended a high school within the 253 area code. Fifty-seven percent of those students are students of color, and 84 percent are first-generation college students. That 253 includes two students from Thomas Jefferson, two from Todd Beamer, one from Federal Way and two from Decatur.

One of the Decatur grads is Alexander Gutierrez, who wants to study nursing after he watched nurses treat and care for his grandfather while he battled a stomach ulcer.
