4 candidates file for Federal Way House races

Candidates for the 30th Legislative District House of Representatives positions had until May 20 to file a declaration of candidacy and May 23 to withdraw from the Nov. 8 General Election ballot.

Rep. Linda Kochmar will fight to keep her seat in House of Representatives Position 1, while prosecutor Mike Pellicciotti works to unseat her. Rep. Teri Hickel will also defend the highly coveted Position 2 against Kristine Reeves, an economic development director.

House of Representatives, District 30, Position 1

Linda Kochmar, Republican

• Raised: $26,844

• Spent: $21,819

Kochmar has served in the Washington State Legislature since 2013 and was on the Federal Way City Council from 1998-2012. During her time on the council, she was the mayor in 2010 and the deputy mayor from 2000-2001 and 2004-2005.

Last year, Kochmar helped bring $5 million back to the state Business and Financial Services, Capital Budget and Transportation committees, including $1.5 million to repair the currently under-construction Redondo Boardwalk.

Mike Pellicciotti, Democrat

• Raised: $58,220

• Spent: $6,924

Pellicciotti is a prosecutor and current state attorney who has served as chair of the Equal Justice Coalition. Over the past decade, he has prosecuted fraud, sex trafficking, felony DUI, domestic violence and elder abuse cases in south King County.

From a family of educators, Pellicciotti became a United States Fulbright Scholar and studied economic development. He currently serves as the alternate voting member of the Federal Way Human Services Commission, and he’s received endorsements from Congressman Denny Heck, Attorney General Bob Ferguson and Port Commissioner Courtney Gregoire.

House of Representatives, District 30, Position 2

Teri Hickel, Republican

• Raised: $30,174

• Spent: $5,048

Hickel was elected in November 2015 to serve the second half of the late Rep. Roger Freeman’s term. During Hickel’s first legislative session, she served on the Community Development, Housing and Tribal Affairs Committee and the Rules and Transportation Committee.

Prior to that, Hickel was the executive director of Advancing Leadership, the interim CEO of the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce, and the executive director of the Education Foundation (now known as Communities in Schools).

Kristine Reeves, Democrat

• Raised: $12,007

• Spent: $684

Reeves is the director of economic development for the Washington Department of Commerce’s Military and Defense Sector.

Reeves previously worked in various positions for U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, who has endorsed Reeves’ candidacy.
