The following is a sample from the Federal Way police log:
Man lights shirt on fire: At 5:55 a.m. on May 15 in the 28000 block of Military Road S., a man went into a business and told the employees he didn’t want to live and was going to kill himself. He told them he was unable to get the medication he needed and he was not getting help, so he went into the parking lot and lit a shirt on fire to get more attention. The employees were frightened by the man as he became more agitated, and they called police. The man was involuntarily committed.
Man strangles woman: At 8:47 p.m. on May 15 in the 35700 block of 16th Ave. S., a woman called the police to report a domestic violence incident. She told them a man had strangled her using his hands. The suspect was not located.
Duplex damaged by party-goers: At 11:21 p.m. on May 15 in the 33000 block of 22nd Place S., a vacant duplex was used by juveniles for partying. Damage was done to the walls, floors and doors of the building. Neighbors called police after seeing lights on inside the unit. Police contacted the property owner and reported the damage. There was no suspect information available.
Burglar tries to break into restaurant: At 7:12 a.m. on May 14 at 34902 Pacific Highway S., police found that, sometime overnight, someone had tried to gain access to Jimmy Mac’s by opening two unsecured windows. The windows were attached to a faux wall, and it was impossible to access the building through them. The only damage to the restaurant was to a planter attached to the outside below one of the windows. A business card with a case number was left for management by police.
Man assaulted by trio: At 9:22 a.m. on May 14 in the 31000 block of Pacific Highway S., a man told police he was assaulted by three individuals on his way to work. The victim was treated by South King Fire and Rescue and taken to St. Francis. Once at the hospital, the victim became combative and uncooperative with hospital staff. There were no suspects or witnesses.
Officer hit by vehicle: At 2:25 p.m. on May 14 in the 1200 block of S. 320th St., an officer was dispatched to do a welfare check. The officer saw a person asleep in their vehicle. Upon investigating the car, the officer saw narcotics and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. When the officer attempted to take the suspect into custody, he fled at a high rate of speed and struck the officer’s left arm with the vehicle. The suspect was not located.
Gunshots heard at night: At 9:02 p.m. on May 14 in the 28800 block of 13th Ave. S., a caller reported hearing seven gunshots. An officer was dispatched to investigate the illegal discharge. Police checked the area but were unable to find anything. They believe the gunshots may have come from the area of Redondo Beach in Des Moines.
DUI arrest made: At 10:55 p.m. on May 14 in the 33700 block of 21st Ave. SW, police stopped a vehicle for speeding when it was going 51 mph in a 35 mph zone. The driver showed signs of impairment and the officer performed a field sobriety test, on which the driver did poorly. The driver blew a .206 on the breathalyzer test and was placed under arrest. The driver was later released with a court date and no prior DUI arrest.
Firearm found: At 11:06 a.m. on May 13 at the intersection of 43rd Avenue SW and Hoyt Road SW, Tacoma police recovered a firearm. Federal Way police took custody of the firearm through the property evidence section to expedite testing of the firearm.
Woman sees man with gun: At 2:45 p.m. on May 13 in the 1300 block of SW Campus Drive, a woman called 911 to report suspicious males near her building. She told police she saw a male with his right arm in a sling or cast who may have had a firearm in his pocket. She said she could only see the butt of the pistol sticking out of his pocket and explained that the man did not use or hold the pistol in a threatening manner. Officers checked the complex but were unable to find the men.
Teen shot in arm: At 8:15 p.m. on May 13 in the 34500 block of Ninth Avenue S., police responded to a call of a shooting victim at St. Francis Hospital. The victim was a 14-year-old male. The victim told hospital staff he had been shot four days prior at an unknown location in Tacoma. Police said that when they questioned the victim, he provided only vague answers and would constantly look away. He said it was dark out and he did not know who shot him, and he did not realize he was shot until entering the bus that night. The bullet was not removed from his arm because it would cause too much damage. The victim refused further answers and the officer left a business card with him and his mother.
Bikes and ladders stolen: At 9:20 a.m. on May 12 in the 31700 block of Sixth Ave. S., a man called police to report that unknown suspects stole two BMX bicycles from his back yard in February, then last week an unknown suspect stole a ladder from his front yard. He said he had no idea who would have taken these things. There is no suspect information at this moment.
Teen damages car with rock: At 2 p.m. on May 12 in the 2200 block of S. 330th St., a woman called police to report that her car had been damaged by a teen who threw a rock at it. The suspect was identified as a 15-year-old male. He was arrested and processed at the station, and he was released to his father’s custody.
Woman robbed on BPA Trail: At 3:27 p.m. on May 12 in the 34600 block of 14th Place SW, a woman was walking along the BPA Trail when she sensed someone approaching her from behind. When she turned around she was confronted by a male holding a handgun. He demanded her bags, and she told him she didn’t have much money, just clothing and snacks. The suspect then demanded her shoulder bag as well. She gave him the bags, after which he took off running in the opposite direction. The woman yelled for help and continued to walk along the trail. She eventually found one of her bags with her items strewn about. An unknown female helped her by letting her use her cell phone to call police. Police were unable to find the suspect or any more items that were taken.
Women fight before AA meeting: At 8:02 p.m. on May 11 in the 300 block of S. 312th St., police responded to a report of a dispute that took place prior to an AA meeting. One of the women reported that she was making coffee when another woman began to order her around. The woman said that the other woman has always tried to control her. She pushed the other woman and the other woman made a derogatory comment. When she turned around, the other woman hit her in the knee with a crutch and stated that she was telling the woman to stay out of cupboards she wasn’t supposed to be in. She then told police that the woman “threw my crutches across the room.” She stated she used the crutches to protect herself. When police asked how she could protect herself with a crutch that was thrown across the room, she did not have an answer. Police told the women that it would not be forwarded to the prosecutor, but they did tell the woman she could get an anti-harassment order.
Man robbed by roommate: At 4 p.m. on May 10 in the 28600 block of Pacific Highway S., a man called police to report an unwanted person at his apartment. The suspect previously lived with him for five months. When police arrived, they notice bruising on the apartment-owner’s chest. When they asked him how it happened, he told them that the suspect robbed him on May 6 after he cashed his disability check and won money at a casino. He gave the suspect $250 when he got home, but the suspect demanded the rest of the money. He forcibly pushed the victim onto his bed and took $1,400 from his pocket after grabbing his throat. The victim sustained the bruising during the assault. The suspect was arrested and denied robbing the victim. He also alleged that the victim made him purchase drugs for him on multiple occasions.
