Federal Way Public Schools announced the selection of Laura Davis Brown to head the Office of Equity and Achievement, a senior management position responsible for advancing the district’s commitment to equity in schools for students and staff.

Brown brings more than two decades of experience in various roles, which focus on equity and achievement, including serving as a school principal, counselor, social worker and family advocate. For the past six years she has been principal of Mirror Lake Elementary, Saghalie Middle School and Technology Access Foundation Academy in Federal Way. Prior to joining Federal Way Public Schools, Brown worked for 10 years as a counselor in the Seattle School District.

“Improving opportunities of students to learn and become academically, socially, and emotionally successful is the cornerstone of education,” said Brown. “In order for them to be successful, we must continue to examine and evaluate the needs of our schools and community through the lens of equity.”

Along with her leadership experience, Brown has participated in various committees, trainings and equity teams that actively looked at the effect of a strong vision on achievement for all students.

“We’re thrilled to promote Laura into this critical role for the district. She is a passionate, innovative and experienced leader that believes all children deserve a true and authentic opportunity to reach their potential,” said Sally McLean, interim superintendent.

McLean added that the district has “made a lot of progress, including increasing the number of school liaisons from eight to 16 schools; increasing the enrollment of traditionally under-represented students in advanced academics classes by nearly 200 percent; tripling the numbering of students registering for the SAT; and doubling the diversity of our teaching staff. We have more work to do and Laura brings an equity focus that will add depth to our work.”
