MLK weekend captures spirit of community | Letters

I wanted to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those that made this past Friday’s and Saturday’s MLK events an excellent and special way to kick off 2013.

The MLK Celebration at Thomas Jefferson High School on Friday, Jan. 18, could not have happened without the diligence and “can-do” spirit of Liz Drake, Erin Jones, Jay Bennett, Diversity Commission members; Herman Brewer and Jessicka Rambus, and the TJHS students and staff. In addition, I would be remiss if I did not include Deputy Chief of Police Andy Hwang and the FWPD for their supporting efforts as well.

This was followed up by the MLK Food Drive on Saturday, Jan. 19, which collected over 3,700 pounds of non-perishable food and monetary contributions for our local food banks. This event was led and championed by Diversity Commission members Greg Baruso, Jessicka Rambus, Chris Brown, Joseph Kuria, and Grace Rawsthorne, and TJHS teacher, Ed Crossan. A very special thanks goes out to Brook Lindquist, our local Fred Meyer, Safeway, Walmart, Top Foods and Albertsons, as well as all of our wonderful volunteers for their help and support.

All told, this past weekend captured the spirit of community within Federal Way and reminded us that there is nothing we cannot accomplish when we all work together toward a common goal.
