Feedback on city’s MLK celebration | Letters

I have gone to the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Federal Way for many many years and loved it. My only critique has been that it needed better marketing, because there were vacant seats that I wished were filled.
It has always been inspiring, joyfully creative, and it showcased Reverend King, as well as our own Federal Way youth, and traditions.
What was heard Friday at the MLK event at TJHS was this: “Some people don’t want you to have this celebration. There are people out there who don’t believe in the Dream. You have to guard your rights because there are people out there who want to take them away!”
This is false, divisive and discouraging. In a public school setting amid our youth, it is sad to create fear and demonize your fellow citizens.
All I can say is that in Federal Way, every day we are building our community together, building trust, and celebrating Dr. King, and our precious republic.
Martin Luther King Jr showed us the way. We are equal and responsible.
Who needs insinuations and put downs? We are best served by building things up in love and respect.
The grand experiment called “America” does work.
