Constitution says nothing about marriage | Letters

Pat Gee (letters, Jan. 13) claims that the state constitution defines marriage as being between one man and one woman, and she makes the same claim about the U.S. Constitution. She should read either document carefully, just once.

The word “marriage” appears in the Washington State Constitution only in reference to the jurisdiction of superior courts over the annulment of marriage. State law does define marriage as a civil contract between one male and one female, but the statute, unlike the state constitution, may be changed simply by new legislation. The U.S Constitution has even less to say about marriage. The word simply does not appear in the document.

It’s time for people to do a little more reading before ranting.
