The 12-and-under Federal Way Lady Knights girls softball team took third place in the ASA State Warm-up Fastpitch Tournament last weekend in Chehalis.
After a crushing defeat in the semifinal game, the Knights regrouped and won the third-place game over the Chehalis Stealers. The Knights were led by strong pitching from Gennie Summers, but the game came down to the final at-bat by the Knights.
Summers lead off the inning with a walk before Grace Sunitsch came in as a pinch runner. Jessica Kuhn then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner, but the Stealers left third base uncovered so Sunitsch was able to advance to third. This was followed by an errant throw, allowing Sunitsch to score.
The team includes Emily Sanchez, Mackenzie Palmer, Kyleigh Carbon, Isabelle McLarty, Payten Hurn, Jessica Kuhn, Gennie Summers, Sophie Afework, Hannah Coburn and Grace Sunitsch. The team is coached by Romi Afework, Mark Summers and Gary Haven.
