• Federal Way City Councilman Jim Ferrell (position 1) announced his bid for re-election March 23. Ferrell was first elected to the council in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007, serving as deputy mayor for 2006 and 2007. In 2009, Ferrell led a successful effort to create the elected mayor position. In 2010, he finished second to Skip Priest in the city’s first mayoral election.

“For the future, we must be focused on public safety to ensure that we have the personnel and equipment necessary to provide for a safe community,” Ferrell said in a news release. “We must also work to support local businesses and to bring the kind of economic development and new business into our city that will create energy, excitement and jobs to our downtown and beyond. Finally, we must look for innovative ways to deliver services while saving money whenever possible. We owe it to the people to cut government waste and spend their money wisely and efficiently.”

Ferrell works as a senior deputy prosecutor for King County in the felony violent crimes unit and is graduate of the University of Washington and Gonzaga Law School. To learn more, email jimaferrell@comcast.net.

• Roger Flygare is running for Federal Way City Council position 3. He will hold a fundraiser at 6 p.m. March 28 at Poverty Bay Coffee, 1108 S. 322nd Place. In 2010, Flygare filed to run for a vacant District 30 state representative seat, but pulled out of the race before the primary election. Flygare is known in Washington legal circles from his 30-plus years as a court reporter and owns two small businesses in Federal Way. “This November the people of Federal Way will get the opportunity to vote for who they feel can build this city into a viable business hub while keeping it home and family friendly. I know I can do that,” he said in a news release. To learn more, email jona@flygare.com.

The city council position 3 is currently held by Mike Park, who was appointed to the position in 1995. On March 17, Park told The Mirror he would announce his intentions in April, and that he was leaning toward running again. Park has been re-elected in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. In 2010, Park was a candidate for Federal Way’s first elected mayor and finished fourth in the August primary with 17.8 percent of the vote.

• Deputy Mayor Dini Duclos, who was elected to position 7 in 2007, kicked off her campaign on March 15. “My goals for the next four years will focus on the active recruitment of industries and employers that will increase our economic development,” Duclos said in a news release. “We must continue support for our small businesses so that they can grow and expand. The Federal Way budget must be sustainable so that we provide for the safety of all our citizens, continue to preserve and protect our open spaces and residential neighborhoods.” To learn more, visit www.DiniDuclos.com.

• Councilman Jack Dovey (position 5) is also up for re-election. Dovey confirmed he plans to run, and will make an official announcement soon.
