The Thomas Jefferson High School Orienteering Team recently won the varsity state championship at the Washington Interscholastic Orienteering state meet. The state championships were held at Dash Point State Park.
The team is coached by James Roach and is the fourth consecutive year that the Raiders have won the state title.
Reid Mayfield placed first at the state meet and Jason Allmaras finished up in second. Chris Brown finished second in the junior varsity competition.
Orienteering is a sport that requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain. Participants are given a map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points.
Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed many variations.
