The Thomas Jefferson Raiders have won more state boys soccer championships than any other school in Washington state history. The Raiders have snared seven state titles, with the last coming in 2005.
Jefferson (11-4-1) is hoping to add one more to that list this season. The Raiders took the first step Friday by securing the South Puget Sound League North Division championship with a 2-0 win over Kentridge in their regular-season finale.
The win sets up an all-Federal Way battle for the SPSL Championship. The Raiders will take on the Decatur Gators at 8 p.m. at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup on Wednesday. The winner will earn the SPSL’s top seed into the West Central District Tournament and the loser will be the second seed.
Against Kentridge, the Raiders got a pair of second-half goals from Austin Egerton. His first goal came in the 67th minute on a pass from Isidro Prado-Huerta and his second came nine minutes later on an assist from Jimmy Oganga. Egerton finished the regular season with 16 goals to lead the Raiders.
Chris Hicks picked up the shutout in net for TJ. His fourth of the season.
Beamer hands first-place Decatur a loss heading into postseason
The Todd Beamer Titans not only picked up a little revenge with a 2-1 win over the Decatur Gators Friday night. But they also picked up some much-needed momentum heading into the postseason.
The Titans topped the South Puget Sound League South Division champion Gators 2-1 at Federal Way Memorial Stadium to claim the second seed from the South. Beamer (11-2-3) will take on the North’s second-place team, Auburn Riverside, at 8 p.m. at Federal Way Memorial Stadium on Wednesday. The winner will earn the league’s third seed to the West Central District Tournament and the loser will be the fourth.
The Gators (12-3-1) take on Jefferson in the SPSL title game at 8 p.m. at Sparks Stadium Wednesday.
Friday night, the Titans got a pair of goals from Ugo Okoli, including the game winner in the 61st minute. Okoli’s second goal broke a 1-1 tie.
The Beamer senior kicked off the scoring with a goal in the 38th minute. But Decatur’s Michael Klavuhn tied the game 10 minutes into the second half.
Federal Way earns North’s last playoff berth
The Federal Way Eagles are back in the postseason for the first time since losing in the Class 4A state championship game in 2007. The Eagles claimed the fourth and final berth from the SPSL North with a 2-0 must-win over Tahoma Friday.
Federal Way (8-5-3) will take on the Curtis Vikings at 6 p.m. at Federal Way Memorial Stadium on Wednesday in a loser-out, winner-to-district game between the two fourth-place teams from the SPSL’s two divisions.
Against Tahoma, Brad Lewis opened the scoring with a goal just before halftime in the 38th minute. The game remained 1-0 until the 65th minute, when senior Kelyn Rowe scored his 23rd goal of the season.
