WRESTLING: Decatur wins prestigious Winter Cup in Hanford

The Decatur High School wrestling team continues to impress during their early-season schedule. The Gators won the prestigious title at the Winter Cup in Hanford High School in the Tri-Cities over the weekend.

The Decatur High School wrestling team continues to impress during their early-season schedule. The Gators won the prestigious title at the Winter Cup in Hanford High School in the Tri-Cities over the weekend.

Decatur tallied 211 team points to outdistance Mount Spokane and Sunnyside. Mount Spokane came into the Winter Cup as the second-ranked Class 3A team in the state and Sunnyside was ranked first, according to WashingtonWrestlingReport.com. The rankings, which came out on Dec. 15, had the Gators in sixth in 3A.

Decatur dominated the middle weights Friday at the Winter Cup. The Gators had a run of six finalists from 120 to 160 pounds, and crowned four individual weight-class champions.

The most impressive might have come from sophomore Leviticus Arizpe at 126 pounds. Arizpe, who finished third at last year’s state championships, earned a late second-round pin of Sunnyside’s Homer Romero. Romero is the returning state champion.

Decatur’s other individual title came from Zach Berry at 132 pounds, Isaiah Diggs at 138 and Brandon Zimmerman at 160 pounds. Berry pinned Kennewick’s Alejandro Ramos in 3:59, Diggs won a major decision, 15-5, over Mount Spokane’s Rich Bondurant and Zimmerman won a 5-2 decision over Chiawana’s Blake Biship in the 160 final.

Decatur also got second-place finishes from Tysten Dawson at 126, Dennis Good and 145 pounds and Christian Aragon at 152. The Gators’ got a third-place finishes from Keoni Aparis (145), Marcello Berganza (170) and Max Henry (182).

Decatur wrestles again at the massive Pacific Coast Invitational in Vancouver on Saturday.

SPSL Girls Championships

The Todd Beamer Titans finished up in third place overall at Saturday’s South Puget Sound League Girls Championships at Rogers High School. Rogers won the team title with 129.5 points.

The Titans crowned a pair of champions. Arian Carpio won the 130-pound title with a pin and Daiza Vann took the 155-pound championship. Carpio is the returning state champion.

Federal Way and Jefferson also had individual champions Saturday. The Raiders’ Jasmine Pleasants won a 5-1 decision over Puyallup’s Jordan Bartelson at 118 pounds and Federal Way’s Roxanne Maidesil took the 190-pound title with a pin.

Decatur’s Auna Carpio finished second at 112 pounds after losing in the championship match.
