STATE SWIMMING/DIVING: Federal Way’s Ramey finishes career with two more titles

Federal Way High School senior Kenna Ramey finished up one of the best swimming careers in the history of the state of Washington Saturday afternoon.

Ramey added two more individual state titles to her already-full trophy case by winning the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. The two championships were Ramey’s fourth and fifth during her career for the Eagles.

Ramey’s state championship time in the 50 free was the second-fasted ever recorded in state history. Ramey won the race in a time of 22.96, which was also an automatic All-American time.

It was the third consecutive year that Ramey has won the 50-yard title. Her performance broke the Class 4A meet record of 23.17, set 23 years ago by Mercer Island’s Megan Oesting. The state record was set by in 2008 by Mount Rainier’s Leona Jennings during the Class 3A meet. Jennings swam a time of 22.92.

Ramey followed up her massive performance in the 50 free with her second-straight championship in the 100 butterfly. Ramey dominated the butterfly with the fifth-fastest time in Class 4A history.

The Federal Way senior finished the race in 54.32, which was 2.8 seconds faster than second-place finisher Kyndal Phillips from Kentlake (57.12).

Eagle junior Tia Thomas was the only other Federal Way school district participant at the Class 4A meet last weekend. Thomas ended up fourth in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 358.70 points. Auburn’s Hailey Kessler won the 4A diving title with 387.30.

Newport claimed the 4A team title with 232 points, while Wenatchee was second (169.5). Federal Way ended up in 18th-place overall.

In the Class 3A meet Friday and Saturday at the Aquatic Center, senior Anna Paradee snagged a bronze medal in the 1-meter diving competition.

Paradee, who has also qualified for the state meet in gymnastics and in the pole vault in track, tallied 341.25 points in the finals Saturday. Southridge’s Danielle Freund won the state championship with 416.35 and Marysville-Getchell’s Brooke Wherley finished second with 359.25.

Freshman Catherine Sobus ended up in fifth in the diving competition with 316.75 points in the finals.

Senior Lanie Vuong qualified 21st in the 100-yard butterfly with a preliminary time of 1:03.47 and Val McNolty finished 19th in the 100 freestyle Friday in a time of 57.20.

The Decatur 200 free relay team of McNolty, Ciara Neely, Sobus and Vuong finished 20th in 1:48.99 and the same foursome qualified 24th in the 400 free relay (4:25.69).

The Gators ended up 21st in the team standings Saturday. Mercer Island edged Lakeside for the Class 3A championship.
