PREP SPORTS WRAP: Decatur’s Beyke wins SPSL 3A golf tournament, four others headed to state

Decatur High School’s Celia Beyke dominated the South Puget Sound League 3A Division Girls Golf Medalist Tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton.

Beyke, a sophomore, shot a two-round total of 14-over par to beat Maddie Pilo by seven strokes and earn the automatic berth to the Class 3A Girls State Golf Tournament in the spring.

Beyke took control on the back nine during Monday’s opening round at Gold Mountain. The sophomore fired-in three birdies during a six-hole stretch. Beyke finished with a 4-over par, 75, during the first round. She followed it up with an 81 Tuesday.

In the 4A portion of the SPSL Medalist Tournament, Jefferson’s Hanna Yi also snagged an automatic-qualifying spot to the state tournament. Yi finished in a tie for third place at Gold Mountain. Yi fired rounds of 77 and 76. Kentridge’s Stephanie Sewell won the tournament with a 148.

On the boys’ side, Decatur junior Spencer Clapp is headed to state. Clapp finished in fifth-place overall at the Gold Mountain Olympic Course Monday and Tuesday. This will be Clapp’s second appearance at state. He finished 17th at the 3A State Boys Golf Tournament a season ago in Vancouver.

Gator senior Carsten Olufson’s chance at qualifying for the state tournament will have to wait until the spring. Olufson finished in a tie for 14th place during the SPSL Medalist Tournament, but won a sudden-death playoff to earn the SPSL’s final berth into West Central Districts.

The top-six finishers at the SPSL 3A Tournament automatically qualified for state, while the next eight get another chance at qualifications at districts.

Clapp and Olufson were also part of the Decatur team that was awarded the SPSL 3A Golf Academic Team Championship. The Gators finished the season with a team grade-point average of 3.67. Other players include Nick Brainard, Nick Zellerhoff, Devin Martinez and Danny Klein.

A pair of TJ boys also automatically qualified for the 4A state tournament after impressive finishes at the SPSL 4A Tournament Monday and Tuesday. Sean Yi shot an impressive six-over par, 150, during the two matching rounds of 75 to finish in third place. A.J. Seo tied for 11th with a two-round total of 158.

The top-18 individual finishers at the 4A tournament earned automatic berths to state.

Girls soccer

Federal Way — The Eagles remained in second place in the SPSL South with a 2-0 win over Emerald Ridge Tuesday. Federal Way got goals from Marite Ortiz and Gabriela Pelogi.

The win moved the Eagles to 9-2-1 in the SPSL South. Curtis leads the league at 11-1-1.

Jefferson — The Raiders won their third 1-0 game in a row Tuesday over the Kentwood Conquerors. The only goal of the game came from freshman Makaylie Moore just before halftime. Katelyn Bird was credited with the assist. Kendra Wallace got the shutout in goal for TJ.

The win moved the Raiders into third place in the SPSL North with a 6-3-4 record.

Beamer — The Titans (6-4-2) beat the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles Tuesday night, 1-0, in SPSL South action. Beamer freshman Ameera Hussein in the 58th minute. Casey Woehrle got the shutout in net.

Volleyball

Beamer — The Titans (6-6 overall, 0-5 SPSL South) were swept by Rogers Tuesday night, 25-23, 25-15, 25-15. Beamer got 17 kills and eight digs from Megan Huff, 26 assists from McKenna Milholland and four kills and five blocks from Reed Copeland.

Federal Way — The Eagles (5-5 overall, 0-5 SPSL South) lost in three games to Emerald Ridge Tuesday, 25-11, 25-16, 25-7. Aya Bisphan finished with eight digs and Vai Ili had 11 digs.
