PREP SPORTS WRAP: Decatur wrestlers win tournament title; Beamer basketball dominates

The Decatur wrestling team got their season started in impressive fashion Saturday with a win at the John Birbeck Invitational at Timberline High School. The Gators, who should have one of the better Class 3A teams in the state this season, outdistanced second-place Peninsula at the 15-team tournament.

The Gators, who should have one of the better Class 3A teams in the state this season, outdistanced second-place Peninsula at the 15-team tournament.

Decatur finished with 249 points and six individual weight-class champions Saturday. Peninsula was second with 164 points.

The Gators, who finished second at the state meet last year, got titles from Leviticus Arizpe (132 pounds), Isaiah Diggs (138), Dennis Good (145), Christian Aragon (152), A.J. Sarno (170) and Max Henry (195).

Decatur also got second-place finishes from Trysten Dawson (126) and Brandon Zimmerman (160).

Beamer — The Titans opened the SPSL South season with a 56-15 win over Federal Way. Beamer got pins from Brian Dykman (132 pounds), Sean Van Earwage (152), Adrian Avena (160) and Gabe Mojarro (220). Federal Way’s Derek Bargely won by pin at 182 pounds.

Girls basketball

Beamer — The Titans moved to 3-0 on the season with 73-21 blowout of Rogers Saturday and a 62-27 win over Emerald Ridge Tuesday.

Against Rogers, third-ranked Beamer jumped out to a 29-2 lead after the first quarter and led 63-12 after the third quarter.

Senior Megan Huff led the way with 20 points and Nia Alexander finished with 16 for the Titans, who also beat Woodinville last week in a non-league game.

Against Emerald Ridge, Huff ended up with 18 points and sophomore Quinessa Caylao-do finished with 16.

Jefferson — The Raiders (1-3 overall) were blown out Monday by the Auburn Mountainview Lions in a non-league contest, 61-19. Jefferson was led by six points from Katie Hernandez, five from Ruby Boyzo and Bailey Nelson and three from Rebecca Woodland.

Jefferson also lost a pair SPSL North games Saturday night to Auburn Riverside, 71-26, and Thursday to Kentridge, 68-26.

Saturday, the Ravens took control of the game by outscoring the Raiders, 27-2, in the second quarter. Jefferson was led by nine points from Boyzo, who also led TJ with six points against Kentridge.

Federal Way — The Eagles moved to 2-1 in the SPSL South with a pair of wins over Emerald Ridge, 60-30, and Spanaway Lake Tuesday, 56-48.

Federal Way was led by 12 points from Kayla Smith against Emerald Ridge. Smith finished with 17 against Spanaway Lake, Tatiana Large had 12 and Zaedrea Robinson ended up with 11.

Boys basketball

Beamer — The Titans, who are the early-season favorites to win the SPSL South title, moved to 2-0 in league play with a pair of dominating performances. Beamer beat Emerald Ridge Tuesday night, 82-56, and dominated Rogers Saturday, 88-46.

Against Emerald Ridge, the Titans (2-1 overall) pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Jaguars, 29-14. Senior Blogdon Bliznyuk finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Fellow senior Trey Burch-Manning had 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Against Rogers, Bliznyuk dominated with 28 points and Burch-Manning finished with 11. The Titans host Spanaway Lake Friday night and Inglemoor in a non-league game Saturday.

Federal Way — The Eagles moved to 3-0 in the SPSL South with wins over Emerald Ridge, 75-32, Saturday and Spanaway Lake Tuesday, 93-48.

Malik Montoya led the way against Emerald Ridge with 18 points. Viont’e Daniels finished with 16 and Adrian Davis and Anthony Rogers both scored 15. Against Spanaway Lake, the Eagles scored 56 points in the first half and had four players in double figures. Montoya led the way with 23, Daniels had 20, Adrian Davis finished with 18 and Christian Jones tallied 15.

Jefferson — The Raiders dropped to 0-2 in the SPSL North with a loss to Auburn Riverside Saturday, 81-69. Jefferson (1-2 overall) was led by 18 points from Xavier Scott and 14 from Cordae MacAfee.

Decatur — The Gators (1-3 overall) lost back-to-back non-league games to South Kitsap, 69-45, and Washington, 48-44.

Against South Kitsap Saturday, Decatur was led by 12 points from Deonte Smith. Smith also finished with 12 in Tuesday’s loss to Washington.
