Federal Way Mirror Female Athlete of the Week for Jan. 14: Kayla Johnson

Decatur senior leads the basketball team in scoring, rebounds and steals.

Decatur High School senior Kayla Johnson, basketball, was selected as the Federal Way Mirror Female Athlete of the Week for Jan. 14.

Q: What is your favorite subject/class in school?

A: English, I love anything to do with writing.

Q: What additional activities/hobbies do you enjoy?

A: I go on runs every day, love to journal and I really enjoy drawing as well.

Q: Person who has helped you succeed the most?

A: There’s so many, but I would have to say my dad. He’s spent so much time helping me become the best athlete I could possibly be.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve been given when it comes to your sport?

A: “It’s not all about being the best shooter or being the best dribbler… It’s about being the

best overall athlete.”

Q: Describe your pre-game ritual and your favorite post-game meal?

A: Pre-game: Before every game I’ll listen to songs that get me pumped up, but once I get to the gym, I put on a straight face and think about what the team needs to do to win. Post-game: Water and Gatorade.

Q: Song you currently can’t stop listening to?

A: “Love Shack” by The B-52’s.

From the sidelines: Decatur High School senior Kayla is a exemplary scholar-athlete. Kayla is a multi-faceted player that is leading the fast start six wins and just one loss for the Gators this season. She leads the team on offense in scoring and on defense in rebounding and steals. She was selected as All-League Goalkeeper in soccer her junior year. Kayla has earned a 3.948 Cumulative Grade Point Average as a full-time Running Start scholar. Kayla enjoys and has demonstrated an expertise in English language and literature. She is on track to earn her high school diploma and Associate Degree this spring. Kayla is looking forward to choosing one of several interested colleges to continue both her academic and athletic pursuits.
