The Federal Way girls basketball team moved to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the South Puget Sound League North Division with an impressive 60-33 win over Kent-Meridian Tuesday night.
The win moved the Eagles into a tie for third place in the North with Kentlake behind unbeaten Kentwood and Kentridge. Federal Way and Kentlake will travel to Kentlake Tuesday in their final North Division game before the Christmas break.
The Eagles used a big second quarter Tuesday to down Kent-Meridian. Federal Way outscored the Royals 19-4 during the eight-minute stretch to take a 34-14 lead into halftime.
The Eagles were led by the 18 points of junior wing Jacqie Evenson and freshman Brittany Barrington chipped in 14.
Federal Way’s only two losses of the year have come to state powers Kentwood and Mount Tahoma. Kentwood is currently ranked sixth and Mount Tahoma is the third-ranked team in Class 4A.
Jefferson (4-2 overall, 1-2 SPSL North) lost its second game in a row Tuesday to Tahoma, 55-45. The Bears outscored the Raiders 32-13 in the second and third quarters to take a 41-24 lead into the final eight minutes.
Jefferson got 17 points from Jillian Rasmussen and 15 from Hannah Kiyohara.
Decatur fell to 0-4 on the season with an 88-40 loss to Kentwood Tuesday night. The Gators were led by the 12 points of Sarah Quantz.
Beamer dropped to 1-5 on the season with a 62-46 loss to Rogers Tuesday. The Titans got 13 points from Mikki Akins and eight from Kaylah Scott.
Wrestling
The Thomas Jefferson Raiders won their first SPSL North dual meet Wednesday by beating Federal Way, 57-23.
The Raiders’ lower weights dominated the Eagles. Jefferson won every match from 103 to 145 pounds. Federal Way won only four of the 14 matches.
Beamer fell to 1-1 with a 52-27 loss to Graham-Kapowsin on Wednesday. Beamer’s wins came from Trevor Simpkin, a pin at 119 pounds, Trevor Mills, a 9-2 decision at 130, Tyler Enos, a 4-1 decision at 135, Cory Obungen, a 15-9 decision at 140, and Nicky Faulaau, a pin at 215 pounds.
Gymnastics
Jefferson tallied 156.4 points to win a four-team meet Wednesday over Kentridge (141.1), Kent-Meridian (140.6) and Tahoma (131.9).
The Raiders’ Anna Wallace finished second in the all-around competition with 33.55 points and Erin Chapin was third with 31.4 points. Wallace also finished second on the uneven parallel bars (7.3), second on the balance beam (9.0), second on the floor exercise (8.35) and first on the vault (8.9). Chapin ended up third on the bars (7.2) and Molly Gebhardt finished third on the floor exercise (8.25).
