Decatur High School boys wrestling and Federal Way High School girls wrestling team dominated at the Hammerhead Invitational, held Dec. 17 and 18 at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion in Silverdale.

The Hammerhead Invitational is held every year for high school wrestlers. It was named after the Hammer Head Crane at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Decatur had a total of 254.5 points, with wrestler AJ Sarno dominating his bracket and pinning each opponent. Sarno weighs in at 182 pounds.

It was two girl wrestlers who won for Federal Way, Tally Thomas at 170 pounds over Kendra Maxfield of Emerald Ridge and Alisia Cendrowski at 190 pounds over Nikki Abaglo of Fife. Both were champions and won with pins.

“It was awesome to see these girls do so well,” said Travis Mango, coach. “This was definitely the kind of tournament outing I believe we can build upon for the rest of the season.”

Other top performers include Amanda Henderson at 100 pounds, Ana Sanchez at 110 and Fernanda Carmona at 155 pounds. All took co-thirds.

“I believe this was a great team effort,” Mango said. “The girls wrestled hard from beginning to end and were able to overcome adversity as it came up in their matches. I think the most important thing for all of them was that they had fun being a team and supporting one another throughout the day.”

Thomas Jefferson High School also had a wrestler who stuck out from the tournament. Heng Yon had an exciting final match against Lakes’ Jonivan Manibusan at 170 pounds.
