Thankful to be part of Federal Way community | Editor’s Note

After going through an annual cycle of holidays, elections and other yearly events, I now feel officially part of the Federal Way community.

Next week mark’s my year anniversary of when I was named editor of the Mirror.

Federal Way — it’s already been one fast ride.

But instead of reflecting on some of my experiences, favorite stories and not-so-favorite stories thus far, I would like to share with you some of the things I am grateful for as part of your community.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I am thankful for:

• A wonderful Mirror family. I am thankful for my publisher, Rudi Alcott, who has faith in me as an editor, my tenacious reporters and all of our newsroom staff who keep me smiling each day.

• All of you who have contributed letters to the editor. It takes your opinions to keep democracy alive and kicking. Please keep them coming.

• Mayor Jim Ferrell’s cell phone number that allows me to reach him whenever I need to — even after dinner or when he’s on vacation.

• The hidden gems in Federal Way, including a view of Puget Sound from Dumas Bay; all the parks, such as Celebration Park, where I frequently take my daughter to play; and the exotic bonsai collection, rhododendron and PowellsWood gardens.

• Couponers who flock to our office on Friday for the latest deals. Our newspaper is twofold: we offer our readers informative news and advertisements. I am thankful for the businesses who support the Mirror.

• Your passion for all of the big projects in our community, including the Performing Arts and Conference Center, the Town Square Park and the city’s recent purchase of the former Target site, among others.

Whether your feedback about such projects has been controversial, candid or praiseful, your responses show that you are paying attention — and that you care.
