Each election season brings twists, turns and surprises.

In the whole scheme of who will run for Federal Way’s mayor or who won’t, this may seem a little like a minor twist, but I have decided not to run.

Many of our readers are aware that I spend most of my time nowadays playing golf.

Some feel that I should spend even more time at the golf course and less time writing this column.

Given the deteriorated state of my golf game, that might not be such a bad idea.

But I also work part time consulting to governments about management and human resources issues.

Recently, I accepted an offer with King County that will have me working close to full time for the next several months.

It is an opportunity to work with people I respect and admire while also participating in public policy issues that are of interest to me.

While it might be possible to divide my time in such a way as to still mount an effective campaign, it would certainly make it more difficult.

Continuing to write about politics and local government issues seems to be a more prudent manner in which to participate in the mayor’s race.

I have to admit the temptation to run was quite strong.

Over the past few months, many Federal Way citizens had contacted me and urged me to give it serious consideration.

It was humbling to think that many community leaders thought I could contribute.

Talking to individuals and groups, and researching the campaign issues, has also helped me understand what the other potential candidates were going through — and what the community’s expectations for its new mayor might be.

As an observer and commentator of the political process, it has helped me write a more effective column.

Who the citizens of Federal Way elect as their first full-time mayor will set the course for the next decade.

Having served as a full-time mayor for 12 years, I have a good sense of the changes that are coming.

Candidly, I’m not sure all of the potential candidates have a full appreciation or understanding of the responsibility that lies ahead.

The citizens of Federal Way will need to be vigilant in demanding a high level of civic discussion and depth of thought from the candidates to ensure the best candidate wins, and for the right reasons.

The challenges facing Federal Way demand nothing less.

As we get closer to the filing period, could I change my mind and decide I would prefer campaigning, working and golf over working and golf?

It’s possible, but unlikely — unless of course I find that there isn’t a putting green or driving range located somewhere in one of the these county buildings.
