The first Reach Out Rollermania raised an estimated $8,000 to benefit winter shelters for homeless men and women.

The event was held April 16 at Pattison’s West Skating Center in Federal Way. Allen Schauffler of King 5 News served as the emcee. The National Speed Skating Circuit athletes showed off their supreme speed for the crowd.

More than 200 people participated. Winning fundraising teams were the City Hall Rollers for raising the highest average amount per team member ($118.75); Megan Johnson for forming the largest team (84 members); and Summers Chiropractic for raising the most money overall ($1,080).

Reach Out Federal Way provides shelter, meals and support for dozens of South King County homeless men and women. The non-profit organization recently opened a much-needed women’s shelter, which wrapped up its first season April 1.
