Chan Kim, also known as Paul Kim, pleaded not guilty June 3 to murder in the first degree in relation to the May 3 slaying of his girlfriend, Baerbel Roznowski, 66.

Public safety takes a big hit in King County

Top King County officials warned June 5 that public safety and criminal justice will take a hit beginning in 2009, when the county expects a $68 million General Fund shortfall. The rising cost to provide county services, paired with insufficient revenue, has caused the county to enforce an 8.6 percent budget cut to the criminal justice system beginning in 2009. The cuts are expected to prevail through 2012.

Federal Way man petitions city to annex property

The thought of inclusion into Federal Way city limits is teasing Richard Butko, who owns property on Military Road South. Butko, of unincorporated King County, can literally see the city limits from his property at 37815 Military Road S. On April 7, he submitted to the city an Intention to Petition for Annexation into Federal Way. The city council, absent Linda Kochmar, unanimously passed a motion June 3 to allow Butko to proceed with a petition, but requested the proposed annexation area expand beyond Butko’s property.

Federal Way-area grad copes with citizenship hurdle in college quest

Irais Cartier, 18, is facing a more difficult path to college than most high school graduates. Cartier, who will graduate from Thomas Jefferson High School on June 8, is ineligible for federal financial aid and for many college scholarships because she is not a United States citizen. “It’s been very hard, the whole process of immigration,” said Cartier, whose family moved to the Federal Way area from Mexico when she was 4 years old.

Pacific Highway construction

• The south end of the project will be restriped to shift all traffic to the east side of Pacific Highway South on June 11. The affected area will be from just north of South Dash Point Road to the south project limit. Restriping will occur from 7 a.m. until work is completed, approximately 3 p.m.
