Fatal crash on Military Road
A compact car and Ford pickup collided in a fatal crash at approximately 2:40 a.m. April 14 in the 28200 block of Military Road South.
The male driver of a Mazda veered into the southbound lane of Military Road after losing control of his vehicle and striking a curb, police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said. The car hit a truck occupied by a 19-year-old female driver.
The man died as a result of the crash and the woman was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Police underwent an investigation immediately following the collision. They had not determined the cause of the collision and were not suspecting alcohol was involved, as of press time April 14.
Performing arts center
Federal Way’s grass-roots coalition to build a performing arts center will meet at 7 p.m. April 24 at City Hall, 33325 8th Ave. S. A potential facility site, how to utilize the $500,000 awarded by the Legislature to the project, and organization of a private fundraising campaign will be discussed.

Buds and Blooms garden fest
The city’s first-ever Buds and Blooms garden festival will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10-11, Mother’s Day weekend, at various locations throughout the city.
The Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection, Rhododendron Species Foundation and Botanical Garden, PowellsWood garden, Federal Way Farmers Market and West Hylebos Wetlands Park will all feature events. City earns budget award
The City of Federal Way has received its 12th consecutive Distinguished Budget Award for its 2007-2008 budget.
The award is given by the Government Finance Officer’s Association. Federal Way has been a recipient of this award every fiscal period since its incorporation in 1990. As part of the requirements for the award, the city publishes an easily understandable, efficiently organized, comprehensive annual financial report, according to an April 8 city press release.
Preschool for low-income families
The Federal Way School District Head Start and the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) are accepting applications for the 2008-2009 preschool programs.
The program provides free preschool for low-income families. To qualify for the program, children must be 4 years old by Aug. 31 of the upcoming school year, with limited space available for 3-year-old children, said Eileen Borne, ECEAP Federal Way coordinator.
Borne said families must qualify under federal income guidelines and be at or below the federal poverty level. The preschool programs provide children with hot meals, snacks, field trips and health screening as well as activities geared toward building self-esteem, together with social and physical skills.
Linda del Pilar, Federal Way Head Start Coordinator, said that the program is also focused on family support.
“We provide parents with lots of training opportunities to help them find jobs,” del Pilar said.
