Hazmat team investigates powdery substance Federal Way resident found in mail

Hazmat called to police station, determines contents contained no contaminants.

Police cordoned off the area around the entrance of the Federal Way Police Department after a resident brought in mail that contained an unknown powdery substance on Saturday afternoon.

While opening mail that was sent to them, the resident was exposed to the substance, according to Federal Way police Commander Kurt Schwan. They then brought the item to the police department.

As a precautionary measure, officers called South King Fire and Rescue who responded with their Hazmat Team, Schwan said. The team investigated the item, and determined the contents “were of no concern and no contaminants were discovered,” Schwan said.
