FWPS free meal program shifts to once-a-week pickup

Parents will receive five days worth of meals during just one trip to a pickup location beginning next week.

Next week, Federal Way Public Schools district is shifting to a new meal program model to save time and money for families, while also supporting the stay at home state mandate.

Starting April 27, parents may pick up a week’s worth of free meals (five breakfasts and five lunches) for their children every Monday at any of the 21 locations throughout Federal Way.

Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), “grab and go” meals are available for children ages 18 and under for free through the end of school closure.

Reducing to a one-day meal pick up schedule supports the governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order, saves on transportation time and cost for families, and helps keep the community healthy and safe, the district said.

Meal pick up will occur on Mondays only, except on the Memorial Day holiday. Meal pickup for that week only will be on Tuesday, May 26.

Per a recent change by the USDA, the child does not need to be present for meal pickup. All 10 meals will be provided in two grocery bags to ease transportation and the bags will come with a five-day menu to ensure the meals provide nourishment for all five days.

All meal pickup locations and times remain the same with one exception: The Westway location has moved across the street to The Norman Center.
