South King Fire and Rescue officials are inviting residents to join firefighters, fire department administrators and elected officials on Sunday, Sept. 11, in recognizing the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

A ceremony, free and open to all, will be held at 12:30 p.m. at South King Fire and Rescue’s 9/11 memorial, housed at Station 64 in Federal Way (3700 S. 320th St.), in remembrance of the sacrifices made by 343 New York City Fire Department firefighters, 60 New York Police Department police officers, and the murder of 2,996 citizens.

Special guest FDNY Deputy Chief Richard Alles will be speak about that day and about the ongoing health effects on rescue workers who worked at Ground Zero after the attacks – including South King Fire and Rescue’s own Lt. Pat Soper, who spent weeks digging at the site.

South King Fire and Rescue’s 9/11 memorial is one of the few memorials that has artifacts from all three of the 9/11 sites: Steel from the Twin Towers, a building block from the Pentagon, and a field-stone from Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where a hijacked plane was forced down after Todd Beamer led a passenger revolt that likely spared the White House.
