Federal Way police catch knife-waving shoplifter

At approximately 12:40 p.m. today, Federal Way police responded to a shoplift/robbery in the 2100 block of SW 336th Street (Rite Aid store), according to a police spokeswoman.

The suspect is now in custody, police Cmdr. Kyle Sumpter wrote in a news release.

“We have no reason to believe he was acting with anyone else and we’re not looking for anyone else. All lockdowns were lifted; no more traffic blocked. The suspect is a male in his early 20s from Bonney Lake,” Sumpter wrote. “It’s a shoplift case in which the suspect allegedly displayed a knife in order to facilitate his escape.”

The suspect was seen shoplifting, and when confronted by security, he displayed a knife and waved it at security, according to police. The suspect fled the area on foot and was seen in the Alderwoods/Silver Lake area of Federal Way. Police searched for the suspect via the use of a K-9 and KCSO Guardian 1 helicopter.

According to the Federal Way School District’s website, Silver Lake Elementary and the Employment Transition Program at the Norman Center on 21st Avenue were placed in an external lockdown due to police activity in the area. The lockdowns were lifted by mid-afternoon.
