Election 2009: South Sound Young Professionals will host candidates forum

The South Sound Young Professionals held its first meeting in April with a goal of connecting young leaders in the community.

The group will officially enter the political arena Oct. 15 by hosting a forum for all Federal Way candidates. The event, which is open to the public and all ages, runs 6 to 9 p.m. at the Palace Korean BBQ Restaurant, 31525 20th Ave. S. An informal round robin format will allow candidates to spend a few minutes at each table, sort of like “speed dating.” Candidates will also give a one-minute opening presentation to attendees.

“This is just a trial run. We would love to see ourselves taking on a bigger role,” said Herman Brewer, a Federal Way attorney and political committee chairman for the group. “This is our way of giving back to the South Sound community.”

SSYP will not endorse any candidates in this election, Brewer said.

Candidates scheduled to attend: Linda Kochmar (city council position 2); Mike Peterson (city council position 4); Roger Freeman (city council position 6); Rebecca Robertson and Michael Morgan (Federal Way judge position 1); Renee Walls and Dave Larson (Federal Way judge position 2); Bill Pirkle (school board position 1); Steve Skipper and Angela Griffin (school board position 4).
