Congressman Adam Smith takes lead in general election

In the Congressional District No. 9 race, incumbent U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, a Democrat, takes the lead against his Republican challenger Doug Basler.

In the Congressional District No. 9 race, incumbent U.S. Rep. Adam Smith, a Democrat, takes the lead against his Republican challenger Doug Basler.

In King County, Smith received 61,674 votes and he had 1,939 votes in Pierce County. Basler had 26,735 votes in King County and 1,337 in Pierce County.

Congressional District No. 9 makes up parts of Seattle, Mercer Island, Bellevue, Renton, SeaTac, Des Moines and Federal Way, among other cities.

Smith was first elected in 1996 to the U.S. House of Representatives. He has served on the House Armed Services Committee in representing a district with a large military population. Smith has had direct involvement with local issues such as the I-5 Triangle Project and potential flooding of the Howard Hanson Dam.
