Shave your head for breast cancer awareness

Several dozen firefighters and their families came out to the Scoreboard Pub on Friday to show their support for one of their family members.

Maritza DeGagne, the wife of South King Fire and Rescue firefighter Ed DeGagne, was diagnosed earlier this year with breast cancer. Maritza has been battling the cancer all year, recently undergoing a second round of radiation, which resulted in Maritza’s hair beginning to fall out a few weeks ago. Maritza decided to shave off her own hair. And dozens of firefighters decided to join her.

Firefighter Scott Ervin has worked with Ed DeGagne for 20 years and organized the event.

“It’s just to support her,” he said. “It started with just people who worked with Ed, then grew from there. It’s more just the emotional aspect right now. It feels good to show our support.”

Firefighters also collected money at the event for a get-away fund for Ed and Maritza to spend a weekend away.
