FW Harmony Kings host teen singers in competition

Singers from the five states and two provinces that comprise the Evergreen District of the Barbershop Harmony Society met April 21 at Journey Church in Federal Way to compete for the chance to go to the international competition this July in Orlando, Florida.

Sponsored by the Federal Way and Seattle chapters of the society, this year’s Division 2 convention and contest was expanded to include the International Quartet Preliminaries, and one more special event.

Nearby high schools and middle schools were invited to send a cappella choruses to compete for prizes and the opportunity to receive feedback from judges. Spanaway Lake Music Company took top honors for the event, with a cash award and the chance to perform on stage with the winners from the barbershop contests during the evening “Show of Champions.”

Support of music education is a primary focus of the Federal Way Harmony Kings and Seattle SeaChordsmen. Events such as this reflect the Barbershop Harmony Society’s long-term vision of “Everyone in Harmony.” They are also key supporters of the “Harmony Explosion” music camp at Pacific Lutheran University each summer for all singers age 12-21.
