Lights. Camera. College!

The HECB is looking for middle and high school students who like to make videos to participate in a contest to stimulate their best creative work. The challenge? Make a video encouraging your fellow students to start on the path to a college education.

The HECB Student Film Contest is open to students in grades 7-12 attending public or private schools in Washington. Winners will receive prizes and official recognition.

Winning videos also will be posted on Washington State’s official YouTube site, and screenings will be held at the Washington State School Directors’ Association annual convention in November 2009.

Deadline for submitting entries is Oct. 19, 2009.

FW Symphony Summer Music Camp

The Federal Way Symphony Summer Music Camp will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, July 14-17, in the Federal Way High School Band room, with a special performance for families and friends 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 18.

The camp will provide students an opportunity for a great week of music/jazz training with professionals who perform with the Federal Way Symphony. Students who have already enrolled represent a wide range of instruments including cello, violin, drums, woodwinds, etc.

This is a chance to do something different with music and to bridge the summer lull, and to have personalized instruction adjusted to individual skill levels, improve technique and learn new ways of playing your musical instrument of choice.

The camp is for students 5th through 12th grade who have had at least one year of instruction with their musical instrument and would like more large ensemble training, small ensemble and jazz combo training and individual work from two superb instructors, Todd Zimberg (Islandjazzquintet.com) and Lonnie Mardis (lonniemardis.com).

The cost is $275 per student. Much of the cost of the camp is funded through fundraising efforts (such as the Federal Way Symphony Gala Benefit, scheduled for Oct. 17 this year), donations and a grant from Soroptimist International Federal Way.

For more information and enrollment forms, visit www.federalwaysymphony.org or call (253) 529-9857.
