Pastor Casey Treat, on behalf of Christian Faith Center in Federal Way, has donated $10,000 to Rainier View Elementary School to help purchase digital projectors for several classrooms.

The ELMO company manufactures digital visual presenters, similar to the old-fashioned overhead projectors. The digital visual presenters, commonly called ELMOs, can interface with computers and display Internet sites, Powerpoint presentations and more.

“It provides a very dynamic audio and visual instructional tool for teachers,” said Rainier View principal John Trujillo, adding that such audio/visual equipment holds young students’ attention in the classroom.

Last year, the school district purchased five ELMOs for every school, Trujillo said.

“This $10,000 makes up the difference,” Trujillo said. Seven additional classrooms at Rainier View will receive ELMO projectors and carts because of Treat’s donation, which is the largest private donation to the school, he said.

“We know you’ll use it well,” Treat told Trujillo as he handed over the check. “If we all keep working together to move things forward, we’ll end up helping a few.”

Tom Murphy, superintendent of the Federal Way School District, praised the donation as another step in moving the community forward in terms of helping children.

“I’m excited about your foray into our public schools,” Murphy told Treat at his office Tuesday.

Walter Backstrom, a local activist who writes a column for The Mirror, helped play matchmaker between Treat and Rainier View Elementary, where his daughter attends school.

“Walter asked me, ‘If you had $10,000, what would you use it for?’ Without hesitation, I said technology,” Trujillo said. “This is all Mr. Backstrom’s doing.”

A formal acceptance of the donation will take place May 12 at the Federal Way School Board’s next meeting.
