I am a technology entrepreneur, an investor, a television personality, a motivational speaker and a 1995 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Federal Way. I also am currently a member of the Washington Technology Industry Association Board of Directors, which works to increase the Washington state talent pool for technology engineers.

The need for young people with skills in computer programming, engineering, mathematics and biosciences are so important for our region. As we progress into the next generation of workers, we need to be competitive by producing the best talent in technology and green-tech. Our region thrives on being the leader of innovation and commerce in this area. We have a great talent pool with many parents from Microsoft and other tech companies. In fact, every company now requires technology as a forefront initiative. We need to nurture this with the proper schooling and education.

I am a walking testimonial to the potential that the technology field holds for students. In the decade and a half since I graduated from high school, the changes in technology have been astounding. Such change will only continue, and at a rapid rate. For young people who are not exposed to current technology throughout their elementary, middle school and high school years, bringing their skills and knowledge up to par will be difficult if not impossible.

But with a strong foundation in today’s technology, they will be better prepared to learn and adapt to the innovations the future holds in store for them. They will have a good shot at careers in technology, or simply careers that require technological skills.

I understand that finances continue to be tight for many Federal Way residents. The district is working hard to keep your tax contribution level. I can tell you that your investment in technology in Federal Way schools is an investment in your young people, your community, state and your nation. I encourage you to vote yes for Federal Way Public Schools technology levy on Feb. 9.
