Having just opened in May, the young owners of Madi Kat Cupcakes are already experiencing success here in Federal Way.
Currently operating a small kiosk in The Commons mall near Starbucks, owners Kevin and Kathrynne Clark say the response to their burgeoning business has been enthusiastic.
“People are giving us a really good response, better than we ever imagined,” said Kevin Clark. “The biggest thing is, people come in and go ‘Oh, wow, I’m glad you guys are here, there isn’t anything like this in Federal Way.’”
The idea for the business came after he was injured working on a construction job in California. Kevin Clark, 21, and Kathrynne Clark, 22, met while down there, and decided that after that work injury, they were “going to do our own thing,” he said.
Kathrynne Clark had been working at a custom cake shop in California for some years already, and had gained valuable experience in that time. The pair had some money saved up and used that to start their business without needing to take out any loans, a strategy they hope to continue into the future.
Currently, the pair has access to a fully licensed commercial kitchen, which is where their creations take form. Whether it’s the ever-present red velvet cupcake or more complex projects like custom-ordered wedding cakes, the duo is happy to be in Federal Way and have the chance to give back to the community.
“Eventually … we’ll be doing a storefront cafe as well with the cake shop in the back, and that offers a bit more to the community as well,” Kevin Clark said.
Kathrynne Clark is originally from the south Puget Sound area and attended school in Tacoma while she split time between her dad in Federal Way and her mom in Tacoma. The business is named in honor of the couple’s daughter Madison.
Currently, Madi Kat Cupcakes will take part in the K-9 Karnival this weekend, with plans for delicious treats for both humans and animals. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Celebration Park, 1095 S. 324th St., Federal Way.
On Sept. 1, the business will also be upgrading to a larger, full-sized kiosk at The Commons.
