Man dies in officer-involved shooting in Federal Way

The intersection at S. 336th St. and 1st Way S. was blocked off for several hours after the officer-involved shooting on Feb. 6, 2026.

A man was shot and killed by a Federal Way police officer following an attempted carjacking.

Federal Way police responded to reports of an individual in a car blocking an intersection at approximately 8:45 a.m. Feb 6. The vehicle was blocking the roadway near the 33700 block of 1st Avenue South.

According to the Federal Way Police Department (FWPD), officers attempted to contact the individual, who then fled on foot and attempted to carjack someone driving by.

Officers and medical personnel provided medical aid at the scene and the individual was transported to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment. The individual died from his injuries, according to police.

According to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office’s decedents list, the man who died was Branden Bouathet Chindavong, 37. According to the office, his cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, the location was roadway and the manner of death was homicide.

The vehicle that the individual was in was later confirmed to be stolen. The individual was also armed with a firearm at the time of the shooting, according to police.

The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy and the Valley Independent Investigation Team (VIIT) will be conducting the investigation into the incident.

The Tukwila Police Department, from the Valley Independent Investigative Team, is serving as the investigator for this officer-involved shooting.

“Officers attempted to contact the individual, but the armed man fled from the car. Following many attempts to de-escalate the situation, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the individual,” Tukwila police said in its news release. “Officers immediately performed life-saving measures, and the man was transported to the hospital, where he unfortunately died.”

According to the Tukwila police, additional media releases regarding this incident will be shared at least weekly.
