A cold weather shelter is available to those who need it Thursday, Jan. 22, through this weekend at at Calvary Lutheran Church, located at 2415 S. 320th St. in Federal Way.

Federal Way’s Overnight Emergency Shelter Protocols were activated by Mayor Jim Ferrell in partnership with FUSION, a nonprofit that helps families escape homelessness. Staff from FUSION will be on site to help manage and support shelter operations.

In emergency cold weather situations, FUSION has partnered with the city in the past to shelter those in need at the Pete Andersen FUSION Family Center, 1505 S. 328th St.

A fire in the commercial laundry room of the family shelter last week impacted FUSION’s ability to offer this space. However, the organization is still helping with coordination and more, and Calvary Lutheran Church has stepped in to offer its space to fill the gap.

As for the fire at the family center, FUSION shared that “the smoke and water damage is extensive, and we are working with restoration services to repair the damage to the laundry room and surrounding first floor areas.”

No one was hurt in the fire, and FUSION shared that South King Fire’s quick response “limited the damage significantly.”

The organization also shared that they have regular fire drills, and that in response to the fire, “our staff did an amazing job keeping a level head and ensuring that procedure was followed and that everyone was safe and accounted for.”

FUSION also shared that they are asking for community support to help recover the cost of reconstruction and operations. Visit fusionhousing.org.
