Federal Way police were searching for a person of interest following a double homicide of a male and a female in their 60s, and located him the same day.
According to Federal Way Police Department Cmdr. Kyle Buchanan, at about 12:11 p.m. Jan. 22, officers responded to a welfare check in the 33700 block of 27th Place Southwest, and located a male and a female in their mid-60s, deceased. According to Buchanan, the department believes the male and female are homicide victims.
Buchanan said that the alleged victims’ son, Mick Carmichael, 35, was a person of interest in the death of his parents. Following the homicides, it was believed that he boarded a bus in the area, and in the evening of Jan. 22, Buchanan said that Carmichael was spotted by a patrol officer.
According to probable cause documents, at 4:53 p.m. Jan. 22 near the intersection of Southwest 333rd Street and 26th Avenue Southwest, an officer located a man who matched the description of Carmichael, told him to lie on the ground and subsequently arrested him. He was identified and placed in a holding cell at the Federal Way Police Department pending an interview with detectives.
According to King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokesperson Casey McNerthney, at Carmichael’s first appearance hearing on Jan. 23, after hearing from both sides, the court found probable cause for first-degree domestic violence murder and probable cause for second-degree domestic violence murder. Bail was not addressed at the hearing, McNerthney said.
This is the second homicide in Federal Way in the week of Jan. 18, following a fatal shooting at the Celebration Park Apartments on Jan. 18 that left a 44-year-old man dead.
Details of the case
According to documents, Mick Carmichael’s mother and father are Grace Carmichael, 69, and Gregory Carmichael, 68. At 9:49 a.m. Jan. 22, a co-worker of Grace Carmichael called police to request a welfare check for her because, without notice, she did not arrive at work, which was unusual for her, but her work phone was tracking to her home. Officers then went to Grace Carmichael’s residence and found that Grace’s vehicle was still parked outside her home, and her purse was in the vehicle.
Despite officers knocking loudly on the door and windows around the residence, officers could not make contact with anyone. Officers then called Grace and Gregory Carmichael’s daughter, who lives out of state, but she said she would contact Grace’s sister and ask her to check on her. At that point, officers left the residence pending further information, according to documents.
Documents state that Grace’s sister then called the police at about 12:11 p.m. and stated that Mick Carmichael had just left the residence, and she was worried that he had killed his parents. Grace’s sister said that her husband went inside the home and found Grace dead, unresponsive and cold to the touch, and rigor mortis seemed to have occurred. The husband also located Gregory Carmichael with trauma to his head and blood next to his head, which led him to believe he was dead.
An officer then went inside the home and observed that Grace also had blood near her head. Fire personnel then arrived at the scene and confirmed that Grace and Gregory Carmichael were dead.
According to documents, officers located three previous Federal Way police cases where Mick Carmichael was arrested for assaulting Gregory Carmichael, and in one of the cases, Mick Carmichael also assaulted Grace Carmichael.
When officers interviewed Mick Carmichael, his clothes were removed, and he was given a jumpsuit because his clothes appeared to have blood on them. Photos showed that the right sleeve of his hoodie, the center of the back of his shirt and the back left shoulder of his shirt appeared to have blood on them.
Mick Carmichael also had what appeared to be blood on his right index finger along the nailbed. He also appeared to have injuries to his left cheek below his eye, abrasions on his right arm and abrasions on his shoulder.
When questioned by officers, Mick Carmichael said that he stayed the night at his parents’ and he then awoke to prepare soup for breakfast, but left the home around noon. He said his aunt and uncle arrived at the home as he was leaving, but he was not sure why. He said that he did not speak to his parents the day they died or the day before.
When asked about his injuries, Mick Carmichael said he had no idea where they came from. When asked about his parents, he said he loved them. He then provided no further information and requested to speak with a lawyer.
