The Decatur High School drill team brought their excellence and athletic prowess to the Yakima Sundome to compete in the WIAA State Dance and Drill Competition the weekend of March 29-30.
The Todd Beamer softball program played at the Class 4A State Tournament for the first time in the program’s history a season ago, finishing with an eighth-place trophy.

Kevin Olson is stepping down as the head boys basketball coach at Decatur High School after 14 seasons at the helm. Olson is set to take over the program at Auburn Riverside next season.
Hannah Kiyohara — The Thomas Jefferson graduate is currently playing her senior season at the University of Louisville. Kiyohara is a shortstop and outfielder for the Cardinals. She is currently hitting .232 with 11 runs, three doubles and 11 RBIs this season. Louisville is 20-11 on the year.
The tradition of tennis at Thomas Jefferson High School just keeps rolling along. The Raider girls finished last season with a perfect 10-0 record to claim the program’s second-straight South Puget Sound League Central Division championship.
Baseball at the four high schools around Federal Way is the best it’s been in a long time this season. The rosters at Decatur, Federal Way, Beamer and Jefferson feature some of the best individual talent in the area and playoff berths for all four aren’t out of the question.
It’s pretty obvious to anyone in the know, that the best high school soccer in the state is currently played in Federal Way. That was evident last year when the Thomas Jefferson Raiders won a state record, eighth 4A championship with a win over Union in the final.
Federal Way High School graduate Travis Ishikawa is making a push to be on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ opening-day roster, which is a little bit of a surprise for the 30-year-old.

The Thomas Jefferson gymnastics team was recently awarded the Class 4A Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) academic state championship. The Raiders finished the winter sports season with a grade-point average of 3.824. The team is coached by Kelie Horracks.
The 6-foot-5 senior guard had an ultra-impressive season for the Titans. Bliznyuk was named the South Puget Sound League South Division Player of the Year and was also The News Tribune’s All-Area most valuable player after averaging 19.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals a game.
The 6-foot-2 Huff was a force in the middle of the Titans’ offense and defense. Huff was a first-team, All-SPSL South selection after leading Beamer in scoring and rebounding. Huff averaged 13.5 points a game and had a high game of 25 points during a win over Bellarmine Prep at the West Central/Southwest District Tournament. Huff also had 24 during a loss to Mount Rainier in the SPSL Championship game.
Federal Way’s J.R. Celski ended up with an overall silver medal at the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships last weekend in Montreal.

The Todd Beamer boys basketball team picked up the school’s first-ever state tournament trophy Saturday. It just wasn’t the trophy they had hoped to be holding after advancing into the semifinals after a win over Gonzaga Prep in the quarterfinals Thursday of the Class 4A Hardwood Classic State Boys Basketball Tournament inside the Tacoma Dome.
The Federal Way Football Club (FWFC) Boys ’97 Blue soccer team travelled to the Starfire sports complex in Tukwila and won the Virginia Mason Washington State Challenge Cup championship recently.
