Four Federal Way-based golfers are set to play in the Washington Junior Golf Association State championship tournament next week.

Spencer Clapp, Dax Wallat, Celia Beyke and Hanna Yi will all take to the links on three courses in Spokane starting next week, with Clapp coming in having won the District 6 championship earlier this month.

“He’s extremely proud, and I’m beaming with excitement for him in doing so well,” said Clapp’s mother, Christie. “All of his hard work has really paid off.”

Clapp had one of the strongest showings of his career in the District 6 tournament, finishing 5 under par, which put him ahead of second place by eight strokes. He started the District 6 tournament off with a one-under par 71, and finished with a four-under par 68. According to his mother, Clapp finished his tournament “with a dramatic 18th hole birdie.”

“68 is the best he’s scored in any tournament,” she added. “He was feeling pretty good about that.”

Clapp will be joined by Wallat in the 62 player field. The tournaments will be played from Aug 6-8 at three courses in Spokane: Manito Golf and Country Club, Hangman Valley Golf Course and Wandermere Golf Course. The two also had recent success, when Clapp, who will be a senior at Decatur High School this fall, took ninth place overall for the state prep tournament. Wallat, who will also be entering his senior year at Todd Beamer, recorded a 38th place finish for the state prep tournament in May.

Beyke and Yi may have an easier time of it in next weekend’s tournament, with the Girls 16-17 tournament only having 24 competitors. Beyke, who will be entering her senior year at Decatur this fall, also had a strong showing in the prep state tournament in May, finishing 15th place overall. Yi will be a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School next fall, and has had plenty of state-level experience on the prep side.
