Federal Way’s quest to repeat as state champions started the exact way they wanted it to in their 69-55 quarterfinals win over Lewis and Clark.

Lewis and Clark led for 1:14 seconds in the game. That took place within the first two minutes.

A Ferron Flavors three with 6:14 left in the first gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead.

They never looked back.

Flavors made it clear in the first half that he was still just as lethal as he was against Woodinville from behind the arc. He knocked down four consecutive 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Eagles built a 20 point lead.

All five of his first half three were hit from the left side of the arc.

He finished the half with 19 points. He led all players at the end of the game with 21 points after a quiet second half.

The Eagles hassled the Tigers defensively as they forced 11 first-half turnovers.

As a team, Federal Way was 16-30 from the field in the first half. Things could have been uglier for Lewis and Clark, but they dominated on the boards.

The Tigers outrebounded Federal Way 19-14 in the first half and 39-24 for the entire game.

Lewis and Clark took advantage of their second chance opportunities in the second half and began to cut into the Federal Way lead. They had 12 second chance points to the Eagles zero.

They cut the Federal Way lead to 14 points three times in the third quarter, but the Eagles always responded.

They pushed the lead back up to 19 by the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, they emptied the bench late, allowing the Tigers to close the gap a bit more for the final score, but the game was out of reach by that point.

Naje Smith, a 6-foot-6 sophomore for the Tigers, caused some problems for the Eagles throughout the game. He was just a point shy of a double-double in the first half.

He was 8-12 from the field in the game for 17 points. He hauled down 15 total rebounds and led the Tigers in assists with three.

Vaughn Handel was second in scoring for the Tigers with nine points.
