Tennis: Decatur, Cassens win SPSL Tournament titles; districts next

Decatur High School junior Meghan Cassens' first foray onto the singles' court went as expected during the three-day South Puget Sound League Girls Tennis Tournament.

The defending state champion breezed through her bracket to capture her third-straight SPSL singles title. Cassens beat Auburn's Sandy Dennett Tuesday at Kent-Meridian High School. The individual victory, coupled with a third-place finish from Sara Lin, helped the Gators walk away with the team title as well. Decatur's 22 points were good enough to outlast Thomas Jefferson and Auburn, who tied for second place with 20 points apiece. Federal Way finished ninth and Beamer was 12th at the 16-team tournament.

Cassens lost only three games during her four victories during the SPSL Tournament, including a 6-0, 6-0 win over TJ's Breanna Ziccarelli in the semifinals and a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Dennett in the championship.

It was also the first time that Cassens has played singles this season. She spent the entire SPSL regular season on the doubles' court.

Ziccarelli eventually ended up finishing sixth and qualified for the West Central District Tournament.

The top-10 finishers in both singles and doubles Tuesday advance to districts, which will be held May 19, 20 and 21 at the Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway.

Lin, a senior, lost to Dennett in a semifinal before beating Ziccarelli in the third-sixth match Tuesday, 6-0, 6-1. Joining Cassens, Ziccarelli and Lin at the district singles tournament will be TJ's Averi Kitsch and Federal Way's Haley Ward.

Kitsch finished fifth after losing to Dennett in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1. Kitsch eventually won two matches in the consolation bracket, incuding a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ward in the fifth-eighth match. After losing her opening-round match, Ward won a pair of consolation bracket matches before losing to Kitsch.

The five singles' players will be joined by three doubles teams at districts. Jefferson's Mackenzie Qualls and Caroline Min ended up seventh, Federal Way's Lauren Lang and Mina Park were eighth and Decatur's Christina Sessoms and Jen Kanesta snared the SPSL's 10th and final berth.

The Class 4A State Championships will be held May 28-29 at Kamiakin High School and the Tri-City Court Club in the Tri-Cities.
